Know your target audience
Who are you talking to? Who do you want to buy your product or service?
If placing a magazine advert, for example, study copies of that magazine to get a feel of the readership. Get the tone right. Speak their language.
When you have something to say, say it Make the consumer interested in your product. Make him believe in it. Persuade him it will make his life better. Use facts, short words, brevity and pace. Astonish him!
Look for the USP
What is the Unique Selling Proposition of your product? The one thing that distinguishes it from that of the competition? Spearhead your communication with one single thought, the one aspect your customer should remember. For example, a car tyre has a wide range of features and corresponding benefits. Major on one, such as safety.
Look beyond the product
Who uses it? Where? When? How do they use it? Be interesting. Engage the reader.
Talk one-to-one
Remember that when writing copy you are talking to one person only at any one time (even if your advertising will be read by thousands). Think of someone you may know in your target audience. Write as if you are talking to her personally.
Make a promise
Promise the reader something worthwhile. Make your offer instantly memorable. Make a lasting impression.
Killer copy!
Keep it simple. Use short words and paragraphs. Give facts, facts, and more facts, Make your copy lively, yet informative and believable.
Buzzwords
These can include old favourites such as Now!, Free!, Introducing!, Secret!, Save Pounds!, Breakthrough!, Guaranteed!
The BIG Idea
Try and create a slogan or strap line that can be used for 30 years. E.g. Thats ASDA Price, Happiness is a Cigar called Hamlet, Beanz Meanz Heinz.
And never forget the Call to Action!
What do you want the reader to do? Visit your website? Call today to arrange for a salesperson to visit? Return the coupon? Rush along to the nearest store?
